Media Release – UDI on Housing Affordability Government Action
Vancouver – Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson today pressed the provincial government to take action against owners of vacant homes, namely through taxation, in an effort to increase rental housing supply. While the Urban Development Institute (UDI) is pleased to see the City of Vancouver strategizing ways to address rental housing stock, housing supply across the board needs to be addressed immediately in order to tackle affordability.
UDI believes that solving housing affordability will require mandated zoning for higher densities, particularly near transit lines, and an increase in diverse housing types.
UDI represents BC’s development industry and we are ready to work with all three levels of government towards providing a healthy supply of housing to meet increasing demand.
Note: Anne McMullin, UDI President and CEO, is available for interviews.
